Slim Panel Design Offers Airports A Creative Solution For Flight Information Display

DAYTON, OHIO – (March 27, 2000) – In 1903, Dayton, Ohio became known as the “Birthplace of Aviation” when two brothers from Dayton – the Wright brothers – defeated gravity and flew the first powered aircraft at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.  Today, aviation history is being made again at Dayton International Airport where one of the largest airport networks of plasma display panels was unveiled.

Used primarily for flight information display purposes, 62 of Pioneer’s 40-inch industrial plasma display panels (model PDP-V402) are placed strategically as stand-alone displays or in networked groups of up to four throughout the airport in baggage claim areas, behind ticket counters, in the business center and in the terminals.  With exquisite clarity and brightness, 4.3 million passengers and guests that go through Dayton International Airport each year can easily locate the display panels and quickly access arrival and departure information.

Weighing in at 68 pounds and measuring just four inches thick, the plasma display panels within the Dayton facility are hanging from ceilings and mounted on walls in places where the previous 27-inch CRT monitors could never have worked.  With a 4:3 aspect ratio, Pioneer’s 40-inch plasma display panels offer visitors wider, clearer viewing angles without stretching or reformatting the image.

“We wanted to upgrade the display system at the Dayton facility by installing plasma display panels because we knew that the technology offered brighter images and better picture quality than CRT displays,” said Edward Hitchcock, project manager at Com-Net, a Dayton-based flight information display system company.  “The Pioneer brand was specifically chosen because of the display panels’ easily networked plug-and-play capabilities, and we liked the thin design and clean appearance.”

Pioneer’s plasma display panels are networked throughout the airport facility using a main Dell server system and multiple Dell workstations, which are individually assigned to each airline.  Using a Windows-based system called MUFID, or Multi User Flight Information Display, employees from the airlines can easily update their company’s displays at the facility from a central location.

“The plasma display panels have made visiting the airport a much more pleasant experience for everyone involved, especially our elderly patrons who had trouble locating and reading information on our old monitors,” said John Sears, retail concessions manager and assistant marketing manager at Dayton International Airport.  “The colors are so vibrant and clear that a number of visitors have said that the new display panels have made it easier for them to determine where they need to go.”

To make it even easier for greeters and travelers to interpret the information, color-coded banners have been added to the standard flight information on the displays throughout the airport to distinguish between arriving and departing flights.  A blue banner highlights arriving flights, while a green banner highlights departing flights.  The plasma display panels located behind each airline’s ticket counter and at the gates also use easy-to-read banners displaying the applicable airline’s company logo and appropriate gate numbers.

“The sleek, slim design is perfectly suited for the modern décor of today’s airport facilities,” said Craig McManis, director of marketing of Pioneer’s Industrial Display Division.  “Because of their versatility, both designers and architects have found that these plasma display panels are a great solution for a variety of industrial display needs.”

“The plasma displays have really added a touch of class to the facility because they help give the airport a truly millennium look,” added Sears.  “Adding this new technology to the airport is a great way to update our facility and celebrate the birthplace of aviation.”
