State-of-the-Art Plasma Panels Highlight New, Technologically Advanced Trading Floor In San Francisco

LONG BEACH, Calif. (April 19, 1999) – As the world of business and finance marches toward the next millenium, advanced video display technology is fast-becoming one of the most vital tools for presenting information and data quickly, effectively and vividly.

Nowhere is this more apparent than within NationsBanc’s new, 22,000-square-foot trading operation within the Transamerica Pyramid in San Francisco, the largest trading floor on the West Coast and the nation’s biggest outside of New York. A subsidiary of BankAmerica Corp., the country’s largest banking institution, NationsBanc chose the most advanced video presentation device now available – Pioneer New Media Technologies’ 50-inch Plasma Display Panels (PDP) – to display information on the trading floor.

In searching for a state-of-the-art display solution, the financial establishment was seeking a multi-functional system that would serve as a centerpiece to the hundreds of smaller monitors that track the world’s financial markets.

NationsBanc Installs Pioneer Plasmas

NationsBanc challenged prospective contractors to deliver a video solution that offers high quality resolution, creates images capable of handling bright ambient light and accommodates strict space limitations within the already crowded trading floor. The company also needed a display that could effectively handle data streams, technical information, computer graphics and live television feeds in a widescreen (16:9) format.

The company’s quest led them to audio/visual dealer AGS of Brisbane, Calif. and Pioneer, the world’s leading provider of plasma and video display products.

AGS’ solution included the installation of five Pioneer PDP-V501X plasma displays positioned throughout the trading floor. With a depth of less than four inches and weighing in at under 95 pounds, the panels addressed NationsBanc’s space restrictions and provided the floor’s 193 traders with the only 50-inch XGA resolution (1280 X 768) plasma unit available in the U.S. marketplace, said Jeremy Meyer of AGS.

“With Pioneer’s 50-inch panels, NationsBanc is using the world’s largest, thinnest, lightest, brightest and highest resolution XGA plasma displays available,” Meyer said. “They also meet the trading floor’s needs for units that offer 160-degree viewing angles, are HDTV-ready, feature a widescreen format and have CCTV input for live feed video.”

Meyer noted that along with the five plasma units on the trading floor, NationsBanc has also installed two additional Pioneer 50-inch plasmas in its internal security and monitoring department for checking system alerts and one in the operation’s conference room for videoconferencing. In addition, two Pioneer 40-inch plasma units, which feature a traditional 4:3 aspect ratio, have been installed within the financial institution’s on-site executive offices.

“Plasma is the future of flat-panel display technology for the financial, business and consumer markets,” said Craig McManis, marketing director for Pioneer. “Forward-thinking companies like NationsBanc are demonstrating now that plasma offers a versatile, cutting-edge presentation tool that will be viable for video and data displays for years to come.”
