50-Inch Plasma Display Draws Passersby Into the Action Before They Step Through the Door at GameWorks at the Block at Orange

ORANGE, Calif. (April 19, 1999) – Sega GameWorks, the purveyors of the best social experience around games, will entice and engage shoppers and passersby, drawing them into its unique entertainment venue with the world’s most advanced, high-resolution display technology at GameWorks at the Block at Orange.   This new state-of-the-art Pioneer 50-inch plasma display will allow GameWorks to showcase its latest game offerings, highlight upcoming events, and promote all of the exciting games, drinks, music and food found just beyond the entrance door.

“This revolutionary new video display system boldly speaks to our audience and beckons them into GameWorks,” said Bruce Fabel, senior vice president and general manager of Sega GameWorks.  “People who stroll by GameWorks at the Block at Orange will now have a chance to see what’s in store for them before they step inside.”

GameWorks Unveils Pioneer Plasma Display

Designed and installed by Innovative Design Technologies (IDT), a Burbank, Calif.-based audio and video systems integrator and designer, the Pioneer PDP-V501X is integrated into a video board system that immediately greets GameWorks’ guests.  This video display, an integral part of the GameWorks facade, teamed-up IDT and Pioneer New Media Technologies, the leading provider of plasma and video display products, to develop a video solution that could deliver high quality resolution and images while effectively handling ambient light.

“As a merchandising tool, plasma display technology offers tremendous flexibility and value -- GameWorks at the Block at Orange is a perfect example of how it can work,” said Craig McManis, marketing director for Pioneer. “Plasma panels are easy to move, simple to install, can be readily integrated within a computer system and deliver a fantastic picture. And as a retail sales driver, they are effective for generating customer traffic.”

With a depth of less than four inches and weighing in at under 95 pounds, the plasma panel provides  GameWorks at the Block at Orange with a versatile display device that is hung from a backdrop wall near the entrance, making it easy to view. Coupled with its high-resolution (1280 x 768) capabilities – Pioneer’s 50-inch panel is currently the world’s only XGA plasma display available in the U.S.  The unit features a theater-like 16:9 aspect ratio as well as all of the inherent benefits of plasma. This technology, unlike conventional CRTs, delivers bright and even colors, better contrast ratios, high resolution and a 160-degree viewing angle in a thin, lightweight format.

In addition to all of these factors, Pioneer’s 50-inch plasma is also compatible with IDT’s MediaSmart technology, which allows the display board to be run from a nearby control room via computer with virtually no monitor or keyboard needed. Essentially, the MediaSmart system is a server equipped with a large capacity hard drive for storage of computer slides and full motion video clips. The whole system has the ability to turn the plasma on and off and display MPEG video.

“Within a year, a high-speed modem will be added to the installation allowing an off-site technician to download new source material and check the efficiency of the plasma panel,” said Brett Armstrong, president of IDT.  “This will allow GameWorks to update the system on a regular basis by uploading video feeds and text documents to the server.”
